Power Distribution Units (Distros)

This SOP defines the standards and procedures for preparing, deploying, operating, and resetting power distribution units (distros) used by Maryland Productions (MP) and Event Revolution (RV). Distros serve as the controlled interface between high-capacity power sources and show-critical equipment and must be configured and monitored carefully.

Improper distro use can result in equipment damage, tripped breakers, or unsafe conditions.

Purpose

  • Ensure safe and reliable power distribution to all departments.

  • Standardize distro configuration and labeling.

  • Prevent overloads, phase imbalance, and nuisance tripping.

  • Provide predictable power layouts across shows.

  • Protect MP/RV power equipment and connected systems.

Who This SOP Is For

  • Power technicians

  • Technical Directors

  • Department leads interfacing with power

  • Warehouse staff prepping distros

  • Authorized freelancers approved for power work

Only trained and authorized personnel may configure or modify distro systems.

Scope

This SOP applies to:

  • Main power distros

  • Breakout and spider-box style distros

  • Rack-mounted power distribution

  • Temporary power panels

  • Generator-fed and venue-fed distro systems

Permanent electrical installations are excluded.

Power Distro Safety Rules

  • Treat all distro outputs as live when energized.

  • Never exceed breaker or connector ratings.

  • Never bypass breakers or safety devices.

  • Keep distro panels closed during operation.

  • Do not reconfigure live systems.

  • Stop immediately if abnormal behavior is observed.

Safety overrides speed and convenience.

Warehouse Prep & Inspection

Before deployment:

  • Inspect enclosures for damage.

  • Verify: - Input connector type and rating - Output connector types and ratings - Breaker labeling and functionality

  • Test indicator lights and meters where applicable.

  • Confirm distro configuration matches job requirements.

  • Pack with required feeder, tails, and accessories.

  • Label cases clearly.

Distros must leave the warehouse fully functional and documented.

Distro Configuration Standards

Input Configuration

  • Verify correct input type: - Camlock feeder - L21-30 - 14-50

  • Confirm voltage and phase match source.

  • Never adapt inputs without approval.

Input errors cause immediate failures.

Output Configuration

  • Assign outputs by department: - Lighting - Audio - Video

  • Separate noisy or high-draw loads when possible.

  • Avoid mixing critical systems on shared breakers.

  • Label outputs clearly.

Logical layouts simplify troubleshooting.

Load Planning & Phase Balance

  • Calculate expected loads before energizing.

  • Balance loads evenly across phases.

  • Monitor neutral load where applicable.

  • Leave headroom for startup and peak loads.

Poor load planning causes tripping and instability.

Deployment & Placement

  • Place distros: - On stable, dry surfaces - Away from foot traffic - With clear access for monitoring

  • Protect from weather and spills.

  • Maintain clear working space around panels.

Distro placement affects safety and access.

Energization Procedure

  • Verify all outputs are off or disconnected.

  • Confirm feeder connections are correct.

  • Communicate before energizing.

  • Energize input source.

  • Bring outputs online deliberately.

  • Observe meters and indicators.

Energize methodically, not all at once.

Operation & Monitoring

During operation:

  • Monitor: - Breaker status - Voltage indicators - Load meters

  • Check for heat, smell, or noise.

  • Respond immediately to tripped breakers.

  • Investigate cause before re-energizing.

Never reset a breaker repeatedly.

Common Distro Issues

  • Tripped breakers due to overload

  • Phase imbalance

  • Loose output connections

  • Mis-labeled circuits

  • Incompatible connectors

Most issues trace back to planning or labeling errors.

Strike & Reset

  • Power down all loads.

  • De-energize input source.

  • Disconnect feeder following proper order.

  • Inspect distro and cables during strike.

  • Note any issues or damage.

  • Reset breakers to default state.

Strike is part of the inspection process.

Handling & Storage

  • Transport distros in proper cases.

  • Protect meters and panels.

  • Keep connectors capped where applicable.

  • Store in designated power equipment areas.

Good handling extends distro service life.

Roles & Responsibilities

Power Technicians

  • Configure and monitor distro systems.

  • Verify load balance and safety.

  • Respond to power issues.

Warehouse Staff

  • Inspect, test, and prep distros.

  • Maintain labeling and accessories.

Project Managers

  • Ensure proper power scope and staffing.

  • Support safety-driven decisions.

Quality Control

  • Distros inspected before and after use.

  • Loads planned and balanced.

  • Outputs labeled clearly.

  • Issues documented and addressed.

Reliable power distribution protects every department.
